A Word from David Schirmer:
Today, jazz musicians have a unique opportunity to redefine what the genre will be in the 21st century. Much has happened in the past 100 years, musically. We can incorporate that into our own music, just as the great jazz musicians of the previous century incorporated the popular sounds of the day into their own music. We also have new technologies available to us to get our music out to the public.
With the music I am making, I aim to create a contemporary style of jazz which has the traditional elements of the genre, but can be more approachable to the general public. I believe these elements are critical to helping jazz reach a wider audience.
Jazz is an important music. I believe it is our responsibility as jazz musicians to continually improve upon ourselves, and to continue to expand our music to a wider audience.
