| | | Mission Street Project - Liberty Tree (Songs From The Kitchen Table) The debut release, "Liberty Tree," will be available soon! What we have to offer you right now is a 5 song sampler from this remarkable release featuring Erik Balkey with Laurie MacAllister and Duke Levine.
"Mission Street Project" is a musical side project of songwriter Erik Balkey with the intention to preserve and further the tradition of songs that are written on topics of social relevance. In 2005, Balkey made it his mission to collaborate and collect songs and stories for this project with the help of American touring songwriters. The results of his efforts are recorded on “Liberty Tree,” the 18-song debut album of the Project.
“Liberty Tree” is the Volume 1 in a new series called “Songs From The American Kitchen Table” and covers topics including the war, immigrant workers, the death penalty, homelessness, family farms and boom towns as well as family, American hospitality and kindness. Co-writers on this first effort include Jonathan Byrd (NC), Ryder Daniels (NH), Freebo (CA), David Holtzclaw (NC), Johnsmith (WI), Laurie MacAllister (NJ), Bonnie Lee Panda (CT) and Pat Wictor (NY). Also featured are songs by Dave Carter, Johnny Cash and John Fogerty.

More about Erik Balkey
Erik Balkey is a performing songwriter based out of Philadelphia, PA. He began songwriting as part of the Red Bank, NJ music scene in 1994 before a four-year stint in New York City. Among the songwriters in the city, Balkey listened and learned as an active volunteer and performer at the now-defunct Fast Folk Cafe.
Gathering from his experiences and from his work on songwriting craft, Balkey wrote and recorded his debut album, "Negotiations & Compromise," in 2001. Michael Tearson of SingOut! Magazine wrote, "These songs are literate, exacting portraits in amber... Nicely played and beautifully recorded, this is a very rewarding album." In July 2003, Bakey released a seven-song EP,"God's Poet Now," as a benefit project for the Dave Carter Memorial Fund. Buddy Mondlock says of this collection of songs, "heartfelt songs about real emotions, gracefully portrayed."
In 2003, Balkey earned finalist honors at Wildflower Songwriter Contest (TX), the Mountain Stage NewSong Festival Songwriting Contest (WV), and the Unisong Song Contest. Cuts from Balkey's recordings have been played by over one hundred radio deejays worldwide including Gene Shay on WXPN (Philadelphia), Marilyn Rea Beyer on WUMB (Boston), Rich Warren on WFMT (Chicago, IL) and John Platt at WFUV (New York City). Both albums charted Top 40 for airplay by "FolkDJ," and the song "God's Poet Now" was No. 6 for airplay in July 2003.
Balkey is a full-time touring songwriter with over 200 appearances a year. He has stopped at such reputable venues as the Tin Angel (Philadelphia), the Point (Bryn Mawr, PA), Bluebird Cafe (Nashville, TN), Six String Cafe (Cary, NC), Postcrypt Coffeehouse (New York City), Club Passim (Cambridge, MA), Evening Muse (Charlotte, NC), Jammin Java (Vienna, VA) and Makor (New York City).
Balkey is a member of the Folk Alliance and BMI. He writes the "Songwriter's Tour Guide." He has held volunteer positions with the Fast Folk Cafe (NYC), Music Among Friends (Hoboken, NJ), the Philadelphia Songwriters Alliance, and Nameless Coffeehouse (Cambridge, MA)
