Kevin Short & The Fairfield Four

Notes from the producer
Planning this recording, Kevin and I talked about how much the music in church has changed. In compiling a list of songs for this recording we realized that few of these songs are sung in church anymore. In fact, there is a whole generation that doesn't know any of these songs. So in addition to making a recording of songs that Kevin's parents knew and loved, we hoped that we could make a recording that could be enjoyed by those who know it best and appeal to some new ears as well.
I joined the 2001 recording project (the secret working title) after much of the groundwork had been completed. For instance, it was Kenny Martin and Kevin's idea to put Billy West and Keith Mack together on acoustic instruments along with Larry Lynch on upright bass. Kevin had also picked the group of songs to be considered. I thought my best contribution would be as a song man. In keeping with our idea of making these old songs new again, I tried to come up with arrangements that were contemporary while at the same time respecting each song's historic integrity.
Very early on I felt like the project took on a life of its own. And the little CD we were going to make (as a present for Kevin's mother and father) became so much more. It actually grew in scope before my eyes. At every turn we were met with an abundance of spirit. The beauty of Keith and Billy's guitar work, the earnest brilliance of the Jordanaires. the soul of The Fairfield Four, all along with everything and everyone else involved were touched with a grace that I couldn't have planned or arranged. Little is much when God is in it!
Our musical brother Kenny Martin passed away during the early planning phase of this CID. Kenny was going to be the producer. His death set all of us adrift for a while and it was only after much soul searching that I accepted the offer to take over the reins of producer. In light of how I came to be involved in this project, it is with humility that I say, being brought back (through the music) to my spiritual roots and having the opportunity to work with and develop a friendship with Kevin are just two of the many ways I was blessed from my work on this CD.
I hope everyone who hears this Music is touched in the same way I was.
